If you have some volume automation set to Read mode and the envelope armed, you can see the faders move visually. But if you unarm the envelope, the automation still works, you just can't see it. Isn't that the same as trim/read? And if yes, what's the point of arming then? I'm a bit confused.
But I can also move the fader and correct the overall volume in Read mode. I don't have to be in Trim/Read (if the envelope is unarmed). Try it. It's the same.

Doesn't "Arm" kind of mean "Activate"??? When it's "Disarmed", it's off, and shouldn't affect anything. It is true that all modes act the same when Disarmed, because they're not actually acting at all. It is possibly unfortunate that they used the same word we associate with setting a track to record. In this case, though, you don't arm it for record, you arm it to do anything at all, and set it to one of the write modes when you want to "record", and then back to one of the read modes for "playback".
You guys are complicating things too much. Start in the preferences. Here are mine. I primarily mix in post production, so I'm recording automation and using the writing actions a lot. I also do not need to see the envelopes most of the time. What does all this mean ? The manual is your friend. On to the every day stuff. Envelope windowActivate - the envelope exists and is used during playback Armed - you can write to the envelope. No arming, no writing. Existing envelopes can always be manually edited, but using the writing actions or recording automation while either stopped or in playback is only possible when you arm the envelope. You can show most envelopes via the envelope window, some with actions, and you can hide them all with actions as well. Very handy. ModesREAD - no writing, only playback WRITE - always writes to all armed envelopes TOUCH - you touch something, it starts writing. You stop touching it, it stops writing after a time set in the preferences. LATCH - you touch something, it keeps writing until you stop playback LATCH PREVIEW - touch something and it stops reading from the envelope lanes, but it does not writing anything. You need to use the writing actions to do that. It will stay this way until you CLEAR THE LATCHED parameters with one of the two actions. Search for "latch" and "clear" in the action list. I even made a video about that one(see below). The preferences really matter here. Explore them.
