At start up the A/C OFF and RECIRC lights flash together for approx 30~40 seconds but all seems ok. The A/C is icy cold, the blower blows ok and the car heats up ok. Any pointers?

You need to read the fault codes - a fault has been detected by the ECC system.

What's the procedure for reading the codes? Do I need one of those Draper tools to read via the OBD port?

One common cause for this is a malfunction of the temp sensor on the dash due to dust accumulation. This is a small grille located in the switch panel next to the 'TRACS' and 'Info Centre' switches etc. Gently run the hoover nozzle over it to clear out any dust. Can't guarantee a cure, but it's free, dead easy to do, cheaper than a trip to the dealer to get your codes read - and worth a shot! Jack

as already mentioned... dust n fluff can cause this, on 850's the impellers behind the inside air temp sensor grills get clogged up and prevent the impellors turning which causes the flashing. you may also have an impeller on your dash sensor which may not respond to hoovering. on my 850 ive used tweezers to remove the fluff and blown the remaining dust free with a can of compressed air. wayne
